An alarm of fire was raised Monday afternoon when two men walking into Yorkville saw flames rising from the roof of the Ed Smith home. They promptly sent in an alarm which was answered by the Yorkville Fire Department and a few minutes later by the Bristol truck. When the Yorkville department arrived the flames were burning merrily. The fire was caused by a defective chimney in the west wing of the house and assisted by the strong westerly wind, threatened the destruction of the whole building. Prompt acton of both the Bristol and Yorkville departments in getting chemicals on the flames prevented greater damage than the burning of a large hole in the roof.698
